YUKI ASAHINA

I am Associate Professor at the Graduate School of International and Area Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul, South Korea, where I teach Sociology and Japanese Studies.

My broad research interests include social inequality and political sociology with a particular focus on East Asia. I use a variety of qualitative methods and a lens of comparison to explore the ways people experience and respond to economic inequality and insecurity. I am also interested in the rise of right-wing movements and ideas.

My research has appeared in general sociology journals (Sociology and International Sociology), specialized social science journals (Politics&Society and Nations and Nationalism), and Asian studies journals (Journal of Contemporary Asia and Japan Forum).

I received my Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa in 2019. From 2019 to 2020, I was a postdoctoral fellow at the Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies and an affiliate of the Weatherhead Research Cluster on Comparative Inequality and Inclusion at Harvard University.
